• Awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by the prestigious City University of New York's (CUNY) School of Law in recognition of her "humanitarian approach to prison reforms and policing.

• Awarded the RAMON MAGSAYSAY AWARD for GOVERNMENT SERVICE, 1994, by the RAMON MAGSAYSAY FOUNDATION, PHILIPPINES. (This is first such award to a Police Officer in Asia.  It is perhaps the first time a Police Officer in the world is awarded with a ‘PEACE’ Award).  

• Received JOSEPH BEUYS FOUNDATION AWARD (Swiss Award) for Holistic and Innovative Management.  

• Received International Award from ASSOCIATIONS OF CHRISTIAN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES : INTERNATIONAL ECUMENICAL FORUM (ACCU-IEF) for promotion of quality of life through the campaign against Alcohol, Drugs, AIDS and Tobacco in  September 1998.

• Conferred the PRIDE OF INDIA AWARD 1999 by American Federation of Muslims from India (AFMI) of the US & Canada for commitment towards Human Welfare, Women's rights, Outstanding Services and for upholding secular values in October 1999. 

• Awarded the first ever IIT - Delhi Alumni Association  1999 -2000 Award for outstanding contribution to National Development.

• Awarded by the WESTERN SOCIETY OF CRIMINOLOGY USA, THE 2001 Morrison, Tom Gitchoff Award for actions that have significantly improved the quality of justice in India on February 24, 2001

• Awarded "Woman of the Year" Award 2002 by the Blue Drop Group Management, Cultural and Artistic Association, Italy.

• To represent India in American, European and Asian International Forums on the subject of Drug Abuse, Drug Trafficking Prevention, and Prison Reforms.

Books :

There is a Biography on my Life, in a book form called ‘I  Dare!’ published by UBS Publishers.  Its also translated into Hindi, Malyalam, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada and Punjabi.

Authored a book called ‘It’s Always Possible’ on the transformation of one of the largest prison in the world.  It is accompanied by with a CD ROM with the same title produced by India Vision Foundation.

Another Biography on my life entitled "The Kindly Baton" authored by a psychologist and a research scholar, Mrs. Meenakshi Saxena has been published by Books India International.  

Joined Indian Police Service in 1972 (the first woman in India to do so).  Held  various assignments notable amongst them being with the District Police, Delhi Traffic Police during the Ninth Asian Games in Delhi and Special Traffic in Goa during Commonwealth Head of Governments meet, Narcotics Control Bureau and as Deputy Inspector General (Range) Mizoram. Inspector General of Prisons, of Tihar Jails, Delhi.  Special Secretary to the Lt. Governor of Delhi and as Joint Commissioner with Delhi Police.  Also as Inspector General of Police, Chandigarh.  Joint Commissioner of Police (Training), Delhi Police. United Nations as Civilian Police Adviser in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations. Director General, Home Guard & Civil Defense .Director General , BPR&D (Bureau of Police Research and Development, Ministry of Home Affairs)

COMMUNITY WORK

Cost free residential therapeutic community based treatment and interventions for alcohol and drug dependents (treated  by now, over 12,000 drug dependents).

Navjyoti was awarded the U N based Serge Sotiroff Memorial Award 1999 on International nominations for its  pioneering work in the field of Drug Abuse prevention and treatment.  This award was received on 26^th June, 1999, the International Day against Drug Abuse.

Navjyoti has also received the Delhi Government sponsored State Award for its work in the field of education and rehabilitation of destitute children.
