Border anti-drug drive

The new DIG (Range) of Police, Mrs Kiran Bedi, IPS, told newsmen that she is of the view that
Mizoram police should play a bigger role without adopting changes in the organizational structure
. The DIG of police Mrs Bedi and leaders of the MJA met on May 29 last in the chamber of the
officer.
Last week Mrs Bedi visited Champhai and also a border village of Zotekai. The
DIG of Police helped the formation of a Co-ordination Committee at Champhai to combat drugs
trafficking along the Indo-Burma border areas of Mizoram.
The committee has been formed under the Chairmanship of the SDO, Mr Lalhnuna
Chengkual and the SDPO, Mr Oja as Secretary. The Committee will coordinate the anti-drug
activities of Police, Assam Rifles, Excise and Customs, VDA and YMA. The border areas are divided
into a number of beats to keep guard against the illicit border trade on drug. The beats will be
responsible to the nearest police station.
