ON THE PROWL

April 30. All you susegad
goans watch out! Goa’s own version of the Hell’s angels — a gang of heavy set men
on heavy growling motorbikes — is prowling the streets of our towns striking fear in the
hearts of hitherto easy going, carefree and careless people.
This squad is different from the one that terrorized
USA’s western seaboard for years in that it is the Goa traffic police at their job —
something they haven’t quite been about for years. It’s the new ‘gang boss’
who has caused the change.
Under police S.P. Kiran Bedi’s no nonsense
leadership city-traffic patterns in Goa are changing almost overnight. No-parking zones are being
strictly observed, people without licenses are keeping off the roads, the system of one-way is
being reorganized and footpaths are being cleared of hawkers and shopkeepers’ encroachments.
For those who are slow at taking hints the word going
around is that a crane is on its way from Delhi to tow away all sorts of things on the roads that
shouldn’t be there. Come CHOG(M) Goans will understand fully well why Kiran Bedi become
“Crane-Bedi” during the Asiad in Delhi. |
